When I was learning English, I remember my teacher giving me a worksheet with a list of words to memorize.
“Learn these words for the next lesson; we’ll have a quiz so be ready for that!”
I’ve never been good at memorization.
And for me, having an exam like that was a huge challenge.
How do you say “I don’t speak Spanish well” in Spanish?…
Plain and simple: “No hablo bien español”.
Now, if you’re looking for a way to say this, it means that you’re a person who wants to show respect for a foreign culture.
That’s super valuable!
And I really want to compliment you because not everyone considers other people’s feelings when treating foreigners.
“Can I learn Spanish by myself?”
This is a question that bubbles up with hope and a sprinkle of doubt.
Is it really possible to navigate the vast world of language solo, without traditional classrooms or formal teachers?
The answer is yes!
You can learn Spanish by yourself!
In fact, this is my favorite way to learn languages, but here’s the crucial bit: there’s a catch.
Learning solo is empowering, but only if you don’t waste your time doing the wrong things.

It’s no secret that movies are one of those resources that sometimes shine as Spanish learning resources.

La primera vez que escuché hablar acerca del “Comprehensible input” fue cuando yo estaba aprendiendo inglés.
Mientras escuchaba una de las lecciones de AJ Hoge, él mencionó que había basado su sistema para aprender inglés en las investigaciones de algunos expertos.
AJ Habló de un respetado lingüista e investigador llamado Stephen Krashen y explicó brevemente de qué se trataba “El Comprehensible input”.
Algunos años después, cuando empecé a escribir este blog, me di cuenta de que muchos de los políglotas más populares de Internet, también hablaban acerca de este tema.

De hecho, tienes un “streak” casi perfecto en Duolingo y sigues ganando cada test de gramática en tu clase de español.
Vas muy bien, pero hay un problema…
Cada vez que escuchas a dos nativos hablar en español no entiendes absolutamente nada.
Peor aun, cuando tú tratas de hablar español con un nativo, siempre utilizas frases como:
“Más despacio por favor”, o la clásica “repite por favor”.
Si te pasa eso, tu problema es uno y solo uno:
Recuerdo cuando solía trabajar en una empresa que se dedicaba a vender ropa. La compañía tenía tiendas en cinco (5) diferentes puntos de la ciudad; sin embargo, mi trabajo no era vender ropa.
Yo trabajaba en el departamento de tecnología y mi trabajo era visitar cada tienda para reparar los computadores y las redes (networks) de la empresa.
La verdad es que tenía que conducir mucho para llegar a cada tienda. Muchas personas podrían pensar que conducir tanto puede ser una perdida de tiempo, pero yo lo aprovechaba para aprender inglés.
Lo entiendo… eres una persona apasionada y quieres tener el máximo nivel, los mejores resultados: hablar español perfecto.
Nada que ver con Arnold Schwarzenegger cuando dijo “hasta la vista baby” en la saga de terminator.
Tú quieres sonar mejor que eso, hablar sin problemas e imitar a los nativos cuando hablan.
Pero, de verdad… ¿Es posible aprender a “hablar español perfecto”?
